Forging courses at Gränsfors Bruk - 100 years of axe knowledge
For more than twenty years, forging courses have been organized at Gränsfors Bruk. For more than 100 years, the mill has built its business around axe making and hand-forged axes, with a focus on quality and environmental responsibility. Over the years, many people have gained their first insight into the fascinating world of blacksmithing in the well-equipped course forge.
The forging courses are available in different levels of difficulty and vary in number of days. In 2025, we hold 2-day courses in Axe Forging, as well as three different 5-day courses; Basic course in forging, Blacksmith's tools and new for this year, Damascus forging - kitchen knife.
All course participants work at their own hearth under the guidance of an experienced blacksmith from Gränsfor Bruk.

What is included in the Forging courses at Gränsfors Bruk
Over the years, many people have gained their first insight into the fascinating world of blacksmithing in the well-equipped training forge, which is directly connected to Gränsfors Bruk's axe factory.
The forging courses held at Gränsfors Bruk in 2025 focus on different forging techniques and vary in difficulty and number of days. The courses run from April to October, and this year the focus is on 2-day courses in learning to forge your own axe. But we also hold basic courses of 5 days in hot forging and in the blacksmith's tools, for those who want to immerse themselves. This year we are also introducing a new course in forging a knife in the more advanced technique of Damascus forging.
All participants work at their own hearth in Gränsfors Bruk's course forge. The teacher is an experienced blacksmith from the factory. Course participants are insured during the course. We provide protective equipment; gloves, hearing protection, goggles and apron. After completing the course, course certificates are awarded.
All our courses include food at Restaurant Augustas in Gränsfors & accommodation (single/share in double room) in our two spacious course houses in Gränsfors. A wood-fired sauna is available for course participants by the river at the logging site. In the village there is also the Axe Museum and the opportunity to try axe throwing and wood splitting.
All materials; coal, steel, wood and leather are included in the course, as well as Gränsfors Bruk's little axe book and Swedish Blacksmithing by KG Norén & Lars Enander. All our courses include a guided tour of Gränsfors Bruk's forge and axe production. Course participants receive a 20% discount in Gränsfors Bruk's factory shop during the course on the regular range.
The maximum number per course is 10 people. The minimum age is generally 16 years. No prior knowledge is required for short courses and basic courses. Some blacksmithing experience is required for Damascus Blacksmithing and for the Blacksmith's Tools course. Blacksmithing courses are held in Swedish and in English if necessary.
