Forging courses at Gränsfors Bruk - 100 years of axe knowledge

For more than twenty years, forging courses have been organized at Gränsfors Bruk. For more than 100 years, the mill has built its business around axe making and hand-forged axes, with a focus on quality and environmental responsibility. Over the years, many people have gained their first insight into the fascinating world of blacksmithing in the well-equipped course forge.

The blacksmithing courses are available in different levels of difficulty and vary in length. In 2026, there will be 2-day courses in Forge Your Own Axe and 5-day courses in Basic Blacksmithing & Blacksmith's Tools. All course participants work at their own forge under the guidance of an experienced blacksmith from the ironworks.

This year, we are also offering a 6-day course in post construction – Build your own post-built house.

All information about the courses is available on the Gränsfors Bruk website underCOURSES.

If you have any questions, need help with a reservation or want to buy a gift card, please contact courses@visitsagaliden.se

The courses are organized by Sagaliden in collaboration with Gränsfors Bruk.

What is included in the Forging courses at Gränsfors Bruk

Over the years, many people have gained their first insight into the fascinating world of blacksmithing in the well-equipped training forge, which is directly connected to Gränsfors Bruk's axe factory.

The blacksmithing courses held at Gränsfors Bruk in 2026 focus on different blacksmithing techniques and vary in difficulty and number of days. The courses run from April to October. This year, the focus is on two-day courses in learning how to forge your own axe. But we also hold five-day basic courses in hot forging and blacksmithing tools for those who want to delve deeper. This year, we are also introducing a course in post-and-beam construction – build your own post-and-beam house.

All participants work at their own hearth in Gränsfors Bruk's course forge. The teacher is an experienced blacksmith from the factory. Course participants are insured during the course. We provide protective equipment; gloves, hearing protection, goggles and apron. After completing the course, course certificates are awarded.

All our courses include food at Restaurant Augustas in Gränsfors & accommodation (single/share in double room) in our two spacious course houses in Gränsfors. A wood-fired sauna is available for course participants by the river at the logging site. In the village there is also the Axe Museum and the opportunity to try axe throwing and wood splitting.

All materials, including coal, steel, wood, and leather, are included in the course, as is the book Nya Järnsmidesboken (The New Ironworking Book) by KG Norén & Lars Enander. All our courses include a guided tour of the Gränsfors Bruks forge and axe production facility. Course participants receive a 20% discount on the regular range of products in the Gränsfors Bruks factory shop during the course.

The maximum number of participants per course is 10. The minimum age is generally 16 years. No prior knowledge is required for short courses, basic courses, and post-framing courses. Some blacksmithing experience is required for the Blacksmith's Tools course. Blacksmithing courses are held in Swedish and English as needed.
